Laser Pain Therapy
Pain in one form or another; head, neck, back, knees, arthritis, sciatica, fibromyalgia, etc., affects most of us at some point and as our population ages, chronic pain is predicted to reach epic proportions over the next 30 years. Advancements in laser technology over the past 50 years allow us to address pain issues in a very safe and extremely effective way, going beyond the symptoms and repairing damage at the source of the pain - at the cellular level - resulting in long lasting benefits.
Laser Therapy is a natural, non-invasive, non-thermal form of therapy that helps the homeostatic properties of the body repair itself.
Laser Therapy Can Help to Ease or Eliminate Your Pain
At laserhealthservices.ca a certified laser technician will apply Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), otherwise known as a soft or cold laser using auriculotherapy (directed to pressure points on the ears), and/or Superluminous Diodes (SLD) directly over the affected area of the body. Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) and Superluminous Diodes (SLD) are very safe and non-toxic. Which approach is used depends on the area and type of pain. In some cases a combination of both LLLT and SLD may be utilized.
Auricular Low-Level Laser Therapy
Auricular Therapy (or Auriculotherapy) is based on the principles of acupuncture developed thousands of years ago. Basically, the entire body can be mapped out on the outer ear, or auricle.
At laserhealthsevices.ca the application of SLD therapy involves emitting light energy in both the visible (15 of 630nm SLD diodes) and infrared (24 of 875nm SLD diodes) spectrums, delivering light therapy and mild topical heating. This process can be delivered to multiple sites over key nerves, arteries and acu-trigger points. SLD Laser Therapy is able to influence the pathology directly at the cellular level, resulting in therapeutic benefits that are long lasting and address the underlying condition or pathology, unlike many conventional methods which address only the symptoms or site of the pain without addressing the actual pain source.
How long are the sessions and how many are required?
Applications may run from 15 minutes to 1 hour per visit depending on the condition and area being addressed. The number of sessions required varies with the individual issue. In a clinical report based on 1000 patients treated with Superluminous Diodes, patients averaged slightly less than 10 treatments to resolve their condition. On average 3 to 25 sessions are required. At laserhealthsevices.ca we have found that most clients experience significant pain relief if not total recovery in 3 to 4 sessions. In some cases additional follow up or maintenance sessions may be required, particularly if the site of the pain is exposed repeatedly to the same conditions that caused the pain in the first place.
Where is Superluminous Diode (SLD) Therapy being used?
SLD Laser Therapy is being used and/or recommended by an increasing number of physicians, naturopaths, physiotherapists, chiropractors, massage therapists, veterinarians and dentists across Canada, the USA, Europe, South America and Asia. SLD Laser Therapy is also being used by a growing number of sports professionals including: The Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Blue Jays, Toronto Raptors, The Canadian National Ballet and many other high performance organizations who utilize this technology as their basic treatment platform for athletic injuries.
How Auricular Low-Level Laser Therapy Works
The external ear operates through the central nervous system and the auricular micro-hormonal system. This auricular system is connected to the spinothalamic system that modulates pain perception and initiates the release of active hormonal substances which modify specific internal organs. Through stimulation on the ear using infrared light, temperature and thermal regulation of internal body organs can modify their function. As such, directing a laser pointer to target specific points on the ear allows health practitioners to effectively remedy pain, as well as functional disorders, addictions and minor psychiatric disorders. Which points are targeted depends on the source of the pain.
Superluminous Diode (SLD) Therapy
Superluminous Diode (SLD) Laser Therapy is a highly sophisticated therapeutic device that combines the benefits of Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) with Superluminous Diodes (SLD) for effectively addressing a great variety of conditions. Superluminous Diodes represent the most significant technological advancement in Laser Therapy. They can be applied to decrease inflammation, accelerate tissue healing, and decrease and even eliminate pain.
How SLD Therapy Works
Non-thermal photons of light that are emitted from the laser pass through the skins layers; the dermis, epidermis, and the subcutaneous tissue (tissue fat under the skin). This light has the ability to penetrate 2 to 5 centimeters below the skin. Once the light energy passes through the layers of skin and reaches the target area, it is absorbed and interacts with the light sensitive elements in the cell. When cells absorb this light energy, it initiates a series of events in the cell, eventually resulting in normalizing damaged or injured tissue, a reduction in pain, inflammation, edema and an overall reduction in healing time by increasing intracellular metabolism.
